Keystone students provide affordable prom wear

A Youth-4-Youth group at Keystone High School offers like-new formal wear for sale from 5 to 7 p.m. March 29 at Michelle’s Café in LaGrange.

Shannon Wargo, 16, a junior at Keystone High School, said the concept made sense.

“Our Youth-4-Youth organization heard about this program and thought it was a really good idea and wanted to participate in it,” Shannon said. “We collected a bunch of dresses and formal wear to be donated to a store. We will be helping out.

“We all think it's a really great idea. We know that some people can’t afford really expensive prom dresses, and some people really like the vintage look. This whole community is there to support others and be there for people.”

Those who live in other school districts are invited to shop for formal wear at the event, Shannon said.

The dresses are priced at $20 and lower. Items to be sold include ties, shoes and suits for men.

Parent Delia Blackburn provided the idea for the Keystone Kindness Kloset, which held a similar formal wear sale in the fall and sold more than 100 dresses, according to a news release from Keystone Schools.

Rachel Norris, who co-chairs the fundraiser, said several baskets will be available for raffles, with the drawings to be announced April 4.

Raffle tickets are available through Keystone students. The money supports Keystone extracurricular activities.

Donations are accepted at Michele’s Café, according to the release. The students like the feeling of community at Keystone, the release said.

“I just like to be able to reach out in the community and get involved,” Wargo said. “I like to help others. It’s a rewarding experience to do that.”
